The Management’s ‘Junior Darling’:
Biased Management & Uncooperative Employee
Whichever the company, role or industry, there are a bunch of Management “Informers” who try to sting harder than they look! The first Wolitics story about this young, ‘looks-like-a-hardworking fellow’ who the Management assigns to your team to be not just your colleague to assist you in projects and in the department, but is also to carry chores and assignments that you “ASSIGN” to this gentleman, only to ensure completion of work. So, being a senior and a disciplined professional that you are, the only logical thing you do is firstly create a Plan of Action (POA) & Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the proper functioning of the department. That is where the problem begins – this young man who is many years your junior has been living a care-free life, not following office rules, policies or timelines, taking long lunch hour breaks, logging in to office at hours only he thinks works as office hours, not completing the assigned work on time (because the underlying problem is also that he is not skilled or trained in the job he does, but has merely been awarded the junior role by the Management for some long-lost reason).
So, with so many problems that the junior brings in to the table, the senior who is a new comer is obviously sandwiched between the ill informed & ignorant Management and ‘his’ favourite ‘Darling Junior’ who he has assigned to you to assist you in your work. With limited resources and a smaller team, this Junior who technically speaking, even though with minimal years of experience is the senior there as he was the first recruit by the company into this department and surprisingly enough, has worn many hats to handle jobs and multi-task. The EGO plays well. This Junior has the following problems with the Senior who has come in to get things done the right way:
1. Authority Issues
2. Egoistic, seething jealously that he hasn’t been able to grow to become the Department Head
3. Problems to “Fall in Line” with the Department Rules and Timelines that everyone including the new Senior is following
4. Laziness to achieve Targets
5. Laidback behaviour because he wants to rest on his laurels and previous good work done
6. Most importantly, a sense of ‘Blunt Confidence’ in the Management who he knows will support him in no matter what and will NEVER Fire him (Hmm. I wonder why!)!
7. More important than anything, he comes from a typical mentality (I think it is to do with his upbringing and beliefs), that he being a ‘MAN’ shouldn’t have a female BOSS!
So, with all these issues slowly mounting into a bigger one, the poor, innocent and confused Senior begins to worry on how to get the department right because WORK suffers more than anything, including one’s peace of mind. And that why Wolitics plays a major role in every professional’s life because ‘Workplace Politics’ is a mammoth issue that rarely gets addressed or resolved.
The Senior then gets to know the truth that this Junior is part of the same circle of friends of this Management guy, and he is also the informer to the Management on everything that happens inside the Department and outside! In fact, the Junior sure can weave so many false stories for his benefit because he wants to eliminate the new Senior person so he can go back to his ‘free ways’ of working in the organisation the way he wants without anyone questioning him.
With so much at stake, what should the Senior do?
Solution:
‘Wolitics’ is NEVER only about Workplace Politics and Problems that nobody can solve! Here is a solution that we recommend. If you too are currently facing a ‘Rebel Junior’ or a ‘Junior Darling of the Management’ who you are supervising, the only quick solution is to STAY AWAY, Stay Calm, and Talk Less. Make sure to never disclose your work secrets or skills or expose your inner truths and feelings about work situations or your colleagues (because that is good fodder for gossip for this Junior who will turn these into negative stories against you and complain to the Management). The lesser you expose yourself or your work, the better. Let work speak for itself and only focus on Work. Remember, Success is the sweetest revenge! More on this in the upcoming Blog Posts!!
