One-Person Army & a Productive Multitasker, Yet, No Recognition?

One-Person Army & a Productive Multitasker, Yet, No Recognition? - Career Coach - A Wealthy Mindz ProductThis is an important Career Lesson not just for freshers and beginners but for experienced ones as well. What if I told you what you already knew – that all of us, no matter how hard we work or how loyal to the company we are, no matter how focussed and goal-oriented we are in delivering completion of projects or bringing 10 times the profitability to the table, EVERYONE is dispensable, which clearly means that we can be replaced by another skilled (or poorly skilled!) professional. Understand the CORE Management/Company ‘Mantra’ “What will ONLY matter is what is good for the company/brand/organisation/management!”

With this mind, and with your own working experiences, I am sure you will agree with the fact that no amount of hard work or loyalty can guarantee your growth in a company or cement your stay in an organisation in order to benefit YOU – the Hard Worker!

Excellent Spoken & Written Communication Skills, Time Management, Being 24/7 available for work queries, Working 12 hours a day, soft skills, ability to multi-task handling multiple projects and roles, prioritise the job while personal life takes a back seat and most cases takes a beating, not too keen on the pay you take home but only concerned whether the project will be complete on time or not, Content Writing, SEO, SEM, Social Media Updates, Website Management, Server Management, Vendor Management, Manual Updates, Marketing Responsibilities, tie-ups with brands, handling promotional On Ground activities/events and Live Broadcasts, drafting Press Releases, Co-ordinating with the Media, Brand Launches, Organise and attend Important team/agency meetings (most of the meetings turn out to be useless waste of time), draft and email out Minutes of Meetings – all of this along with miscellaneous chores along with handling 6 different brands for the Parent Company. Yes, if you read the above profile of list of work, you will immediately realise that a Marketing Manager, a Digital Marketing Manager, a Content Writer, an SEO Specialist, an SEM manager, Social Media Manager, Live event co Ordinator, PR & Communications Manager, Website IT Manager & a personal assistant would have evenly distributed the work listed above. But nah! We are not listing the Roles & Responsibilities of 10 different Employees but just ONE. The only one who has been multi-tasking and running a one WOMAN show!

This is not a story of one day or one year, but a story that went on for at least 5 years until the organisation felt the “need” to expand their team from the One PERSON HANDLE ALL to new recruits trying to distribute this mammoth task. Why did this employee suffer in silence? Was she given a bonus for handling 10 people’s roles?  Was she recognised as the BEST Employee of the organisation? Did her salary increase 10-fold? Did she take home a three-figure salary? Did she get a promotion every year for her dedication and loyalty and more importantly, the multi-tasking tireless work that she successfully managed? The answer to all of this is a big NO!

Here is the Employee’s perspective: Her main motive to handle multiple teams/departments/projects/brands was purely to learn in order to be able to understand the attributes of every department including technical & non-technical so one day, she can be a great senior professional, get promoted and lead a team. And, another aspect of her working so hard was the FEAR of losing the job in a media organisation. Imagine the company hiring 10 different professionals instead of her, and this is the only FEAR she literally had that drove her crazy in the most positive way possible so she could be a super woman handling jobs, stretch her time until late night and start early again in the morning. Little did she realise that her health was being side lined as she suffered with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – which basically was severe pain in the wrist and fingers, so painful that she could hardly type on a computer, ride her bike, pick up a spoon and eat. This fine employee had problems in handling even the basic personal chores of lifting a bag, chopping fruits or even just typing on the phone. The worse was when someone shook her hands, it made it so painful that she would literally end up in tears. So, with the fear of losing the job or with the FEAR of not getting promoted, she made sure to use a corset to her hands and continued to suffer in silence trying to finish her office work because the one thing she took very seriously is the completion of work.

This Employee’s Carpal Tunnel Syndrome worsened because her so called company failed to arrange for her travel as she continued to commute for 30 kilometres riding her bike up and down every day. The doctor reiterated that she was suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome purely because of work stress, constantly being on the computer – constant typing, using the mouse for design, working on creatives etc… and stressed on the fact that in order for her to get better, she must take frequent breaks from work and relax her muscles. Imagine her plight of going back home late night to dip her hands in hot water every night to sooth the pain.

She didn’t ask for the management’s help, because she feared that any discussion of reaching out for help or support would mean that the management will look for other alternatives or replace her with other employees.

Why did the company oversee the safety of a fine employee who gave her 1000% (yes thousand percent) and failed to better her life? Did they “opt” to SAVE investing on hiring 10 other people as part of her team so she could be supported? WHY? WHY did they not even offer her an assistant to run these chores? Didn’t the company have Employee HR Policies that could help the employee? Couldn’t they, to save the least offer a drop and pick up for this employee so she didn’t have to ride her scooter for 30 kilometres making her wrists and fingers so worse that they looked like swollen balloons while she was even unable to eat with a spoon?  After all this, was she at least given a good hike in salary and a promotion to lead a team? NO.

All this teaches just ONE lesson that we wish everyone realises before it is too late. DO NOT be naïve and continue to work hard without proper judgement or foresight on IF the company will acknowledge your hard work. Always think how you will benefit from all that good work you do. Be loyal to the company but don’t be BLIND. See, hear, think, know everything so you have a better career while not investing or wasting your valuable time in an organisation that is so blind to see your efforts that they fail to acknowledge it. Why would they care? Because the one person who truly should care about you is YOU, and you alone.

More on this in the upcoming blog posts. Do you have a similar story to share? Share if your DARE and so share if you CARE about other innocent working professionals who live in a dream world that someone someday in the management will wake up and THANK Them or PROMOTE Them! Isn’t going to happen my friends!
