Building a Solid English Vocabulary for Workplace
Occupational Success, Career Growth, Improved Communication Skills, Positive Attitude, Successful and Meaningful discussions and more – these are some of the added benefits if you master the English Vocabulary. A robust vocabulary helps you improve all areas of Communication at the Workplace, be it Writing Professional Emails, Creating Presentations, being part of team discussions, listening and reacting to your team members and more importantly, speaking fluently and with ease. Always remember – ‘Communication is Key.’
Ground Rules:
1. Research and read online to build a focussed personal dictionary of phrases, words, sentences and technical jargons that are commonly used in the field you work in.
2. Make sure your customised vocabulary is industry-specific, your job/role-specific and covers explaining your responsibilities in detail.
3. English being the most universally spoken and the only primary language in the corporate world, your hold on varied phrases, words & sentences will set you apart from the rest of the crowd.
4. By building on your personal dictionary, you get to seal the deal with fate in terms of Career advancement and if you are looking to travel and work abroad, English & Globalization go hand in hand.
5. Along with your industry/job-specific Vocabulary, become an expert in generic list of wordlist/jargons and verbiages to accelerate your success at the Workplace.
6. Do note, the most important thing that you need to keep in mind is to NOT overuse jargons and phrases that sound strange and that your team members, colleagues & others find difficult to understand. The idea is to Communicate well, not confuse others!
7. Communication should be simple, straight, elegant, to the point, stylish, compact & crisp so everyone in a room can understand your language.
8. Be consistent with the way you speak, write, read and communicate and do not change it often.
9. Most importantly, if you have an MTI (Mother Tongue Influence) on English, make sure you improve your pronunciation by constant reading and listening to English Audio/Video Clips on News and Information in General.
10. Recommended pronunciation and writing will be ‘British English’ since that is the origin of English! Although you may get accustomed to various types of English Pronunciation depending on your exposure to your company/organisation/work structure and how global they are.
