What’s Your Secret Sauce of Success?
Cast, Colour, Creed, Culture – Irrespective of Who, What, Where or How – People are different. They could be negative or positive in their thought process. They could be helpful, or selfish. They could be greedy or selfless. They could be jealous or encouraging. They could be sympathetic or emphatic. They could support you and help you shine or could sabotage you. Either way, what matters the most is how we REACT to them and their behaviour.
Famous Educator & Author Charles Swindoll said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.”
To a certain extent, this applies to everything we do in our work life or career as well. As humans, we expect a positive pat of encouragement or reaction towards our work by our superiors, colleagues and friends. But what we fail to understand is that not everyone is made of absolute selfless purity, and most of us are ridden by emotions of fear, inferiority complex, fear of being replaced, jealously, thoughts of negativity or hatred towards our peers and more. When our colleagues, superiors, friends or peers fail to acknowledge our good work or even sometimes (most of the time) ignore our good work because of their own emotions of jealously or farsightedness, we feel hurt. And we react in a certain way. Imagine your department head trying to find faults in your project work while not acknowledging your hard work that you put in for months! Instead of commending you on a great job done in completing the project way before your deadline, he/she is focussing all their energy in trying to put you down.
Praise is definitely not on your mind when you are being put down by your superior in front of your colleagues and team mates. What is running through your mind is that someone is trying to sabotage you & belittle you. This is where you being 100% responsible of how you react comes in. Instead of a cold war or a bitter verbal exchange of words with your superior, you can opt for remaining silent, if not agree to his/her point of view, but just make eye contact not showing any trace of remorse or anger, but maintaining your cool and let this tide pass with a stern face. No one will recommend you to take workplace politics the way they currently are, but there is a right time and place that you can address it. Perhaps, the best solution is to have a one-on-one discussion with your team leader who tried to sabotage you. And then once you realise what the problem is, you can surely work on it. If that ‘someone’ is jealous of your success and is suffering from a terrible inferiority complex that one day you will be promoted to his/her level, then the only best solution for you is to have a discussion with the HR department, bring it to your Management’s notice or speak up. Remember, NEVER suffer in silence.
The best way to react less to certain hostile situations at work is to give space for individuals so they can think back on their actions. Imagine all of us being controlled by anger and rage, the world would be a difficult place to live. Especially, at the workplace, your work life, career growth and achievements are all tied down to HOW you REACT! Make sure to understand the situation, weigh in on the plus and minus and then respond.
“Words once spoken cannot be taken back.” They can be forgiven but never forgotten! One a lighter note, in a digital day and age, people can storm you with memes of your reactions at work. Let’s not discuss the adversities of this to ruin your great reading of our SOS section.
